Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt of Hyaluronic acid and has a much smaller molecular size than Hyaluronic acid, causing it to easily penetrate the skin's surface, and is able to retain a relatively large amount of water — up to 1,000 its own weight. This means it can penetrate to lower layers of the skin, attract and retain water, and promote nutrient absorption. Sodium Hyaluronate is produced biotechnologically through microbial fermentation of yeast extract. It is rated a 1 out of 10 by EWG’s Skin Deep safety database, with 1 being the safest rating that they give.

When different molecular weights are used simultaneously in the same formulation, it can have synergetic effects, to activate global moisturization throughout the layers of the skin and less trans-epidermal water loss.

High Molecular Weight – Lubricating, film-forming, moisturizing and helps prevent skin damage by reducing trans-epidermal water loss so the skin becomes tender and smooth.
Low Molecular Weight – Penetrates to the middle layers of the skin for long-lasting moisturization.
Oligo / Super Low Molecular Weight – Quickly penetrates to the deep layers of the skin and nourishes it from the inside for deep hydration.

If you’ve seen products boasting Botanical Hyaluronic Acid over 2%, then they are most likely using BASF Hyalurosmooth LS 8998 aka Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide and it is of high-molecular-weight only and it actually does not contain any Hyaluronic Acid or derivatives. Per BASF, 5% LS 8998 equates to .2% Sodium Hyaluronate so it would take 50% LS 8998 to equate to 2% Sodium Hyaluronate, so it doesn’t compare. In addition, 5% of LS 8998 is the maximum recommend dosage so you would have to exceed the max by 10 times to equate to 2% Sodium Hyaluronate.
